Our trip abroad begins with Daphne Matziaraki’s Oscar-nominated “4.1 Miles,” following a Greek Coast Guard captain charged with saving thousands of refugees as they try to cross the 4.1 miles of water between Turkey and the island of Lesbos. In Marta Savina’s “Viola, Franca,” we visit 1965 Sicily, when women were forced to marry their rapists until one woman rebelled and paved the way for women’s rights. In Sundance winner “And So We Put Goldfish in the Pool,” we get an intimate introduction to four extremely interesting 15-year-old girls from Japan. And this shorts program also includes Colombian director Victoria Rivera’s trip abroad to New Orleans to capture the Northside “Skull + Bone” Gang waking the city before dawn on Mardi Gras with drums, chants, and ceremonial knocking on doors to warn against violence, all beautifully shot by Traverse City’s own Soren Nielsen.
