There are trips, and then there are trips. Colombian director Victoria Rivera went to New Orleans for “Skull + Bone,” beautifully shot by Traverse City’s own Soren Nielsen. She captured the Northside Skull + Bone Gang waking the city before dawn on Mardi Gras with drums, chants, and ceremonial knocking on doors to warn against violence. Marta Savina’s “Viola, Franca” takes us on a trip into the not-too-distant past, 1965 Sicily, when women were forced to marry their rapists until one woman rebelled and paved the way for women’s rights. And in Daphne Matziaraki’s Oscar-nominated “4.1 Miles,” we travel with a Greek Coast Guard captain who is charged with saving thousands of refugees as they try to cross the 4.1 miles of water between Turkey and the island of Lesbos.

Description

In 4.1 miles (the distance from the Turkish coast to the island of Lesbos) the director’s camera takes the audience on board a coast guard boat where the captain works in the heart of a nightmare. In the course of a single day, the film follows his tiny crew’s response to emergency calls in rough waters where they find terrified, freezing families, many with small children, waiting for rescue.
