There are trips, and then there are trips. Colombian director Victoria Rivera went to New Orleans for “Skull + Bone,” beautifully shot by Traverse City’s own Soren Nielsen. She captured the Northside Skull + Bone Gang waking the city before dawn on Mardi Gras with drums, chants, and ceremonial knocking on doors to warn against violence. Marta Savina’s “Viola, Franca” takes us on a trip into the not-too-distant past, 1965 Sicily, when women were forced to marry their rapists until one woman rebelled and paved the way for women’s rights. And in Daphne Matziaraki’s Oscar-nominated “4.1 Miles,” we travel with a Greek Coast Guard captain who is charged with saving thousands of refugees as they try to cross the 4.1 miles of water between Turkey and the island of Lesbos.

Description

For 200 years every Mardi Gras has started the same way: Dressed as skeletons, armed with bones, The Northside Skull and Bone Gang wake the city before dawn with drums, chants and ceremonial knocking on doors to warn people against violence, gunplay, and other negative influences on the streets.
