In China, the government has dubbed “internet addiction” as the new number one public health concern among teenagers. To combat this perceived plague among modern youth, they open the world’s first internet rehab center in a prison-like building outside of Beijing—one of 400 planned to open across the country. Directors Shosh Shlam (“Good Garbage,” TCFF ‘13) and Hilla Medalia’s eye-opening documentary focuses on 16-year-old Hope and his time in and out of the detox center, from his immersion in fantasy games and massive online communities to the bizarre treatments offered as a cure. “Web Junkie” offers a fascinating window into the rapidly-changing cultural landscape of modern China and the generational gap between those in power and the youth upon whom the country’s hopes are pinned.
