Made over a six-year period, Andrea Arnold’s first feature-length documentary immerses us in the daily life of Luma, a dairy cow. The humans monitoring and milking Luma are only seen on the edge of the frame, their voices an off-screen chorus that is affectionate, yet insistently controlling. This is not a story about humans, or human emotions. Rather than encourage an anthropomorphic view, Arnold’s simultaneously dispassionate and heartbreakingly beautiful film offers new insight into the souls of animals.
