Description

Based on the tragic true story of the slaying of 22-year-old Oscar Grant by Bay Area transit police, this powerhouse drama follows Grant (Michael B. Jordan) over the course of New Year’s Eve in 2008 and the fateful night when he met his end. Opening with cell phone videos of the actual incident in the Fruitvale train station, the film rewinds to present the last 24 hours in Grant’s life as he squabbles with his longtime girlfriend (Melonie Diaz), dotes on his daughter and spends time with his mom (Octavia Spencer). First-time filmmaker and Oakland native Ryan Coogler instills a personal connection to the story as he captures life in his Bay Area community with nuance and heart. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for dramatic feature at Sundance, this timely film is a powerful reminder of the violence and racial profiling that still plague our country.
