The Hippopotamus
Garden Theater - Frankfort Tue, Jul 18, 2017 6:00 PM
Wit and big words take center stage in this irreverent and profane mystery-comedy set against the picturesque backdrop of the English countryside. Roger Allam (“Mr. Holmes”) gives a brilliant performance in the role he was born to play: a washed up poet turned theater-reviewer whose preternatural ability to crack wise is matched only by his thirst for whiskey. After losing his job for drunkenly interrupting a stunningly misconceived performance of “Titus Andronicus,” he accepts a job investigating a series of faith-healing miracles at a large manor owned by his old friend, Lord Michael Logan (Matthew Modine). Adapted from Stephen Fry’s novel, this enjoyable frolic delivers brilliant repartee, plenty of tongue-in-cheek gags, and a dash of slapstick, before it culminates in a semi-sendup of the classic detective case-solving climax where the involved parties are gathered in a room to be confronted by an extremely non-debonair Nick Charles.
