Can a gory horror film convert more people to vegetarianism than a thousand documentaries touting the meatless lifestyle? “Raw” certainly makes a compelling case for “yes.” This cross between “Carrie” and “Cannibal Holocaust” by way of the Davids (Lynch and Cronenberg) will have you squirming in your seat—even while you’re riveted to the screen. Eighteen-year-old Justine is a virgin vegetarian veterinary student, which leads her new classmates to employ extremely “heightened” hazing rituals involving blood and consumption of animal organs. Justine’s mandatory meat munching ignites an insatiable appetite for flesh, in all its many forms, and one of the most profoundly inspired awakenings ever filmed ensues. Definitely not for the faint of heart, writer-director Julia Ducournau’s beautiful, original, gonzo vision—with its deeply satisfying feminist undercurrent—is a cinematic feast for those with more adventurous tastes
