Mr. Long
2017 | Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan | NR | 129 min.
When an injured hit man gets stranded without funds in a small Japanese village after a job gone terribly wrong, we all know what’ll happen next: he’ll get food and first aid from a cute kid who needs him, too, then befriend the quirky villagers, open up a popular noodle stand, and fall in love with a drug addict. In this refreshingly sweet twist on the classic gangster film, ultra-cool Taiwanese hitman Mr. Long seems content to enjoy the simple life, until his checkered past catches up to him and creates lasting consequences for the village that has taken him in. With just the right dose of edginess, this story of redemption moves skillfully between dazzlingly choreographed fight scenes, slapstick comedy, and heartwarming drama. It’s the perfect escape from the mundane routine of ordinary life, and practically made for TC.
