Sometimes life puts you out of your element, and sometimes you choose to venture there yourself. It may not always pay off, but it’s always an interesting journey in these award-winning short docs. Two Polish bros with no experience decide to get rich farming escargot in “Snails;” the man behind the gritty voice of the first gay-themed country album, released 40 years ago, recounts his journey in “These C*cksucking Tears” (Best Short Doc, SXSW); the losingest horse in history becomes a bright pink ray of hope for an economically challenged Japan in “The Shining Star of Losers Everywhere” (Best Short Doc, Hot Docs); and in Sundance Jury Award-winner “Bacon & God’s Wrath,” a 90-yearold Jewish woman reflects on her life as she prepares to try bacon for the first time.
