Claire Carré reinvents the post-apocalyptic
genre in this imaginative scifi triumph that
imagines a dystopian world robbed of memory.
Set in a bleak and eerie wasteland that was once
Indiana, “Embers” follows several survivors of
a devastating virus that causes both short and
long-term memory loss. Two lovers wake up as
strangers every morning in each other’s arms;
an orphan wanders in search of a parent; a violence-prone
young man does whatever it takes
to survive. Meanwhile, a professor desperately
searches for a cure, while a girl trapped with
her father in an underground bunker—protected
from the virus, memories intact—must decide
whether it’s worth risking infection to regain her
freedom. This haunting, thought-provoking film
raises questions of identity, connection, and our
place in the world that are impossible to forget.
