Description

Fresh on the heels of a bad breakup with his beau, newly-single Brooklynite David Thorpe decides to take stock of his perceived flaws as he works on getting his life back in order. Chief among them: his anxiety about sounding “too gay.” Enlisting the help of voice coaches, linguists, friends and family, and total strangers, he embarks on a hilarious and fascinating journey of self-identity that opens onto a larger discussion of gay identity in America and the cultural history of the so-called gay voice. Featuring interviews with gay icons like Dan Savage, David Sedaris, Tim Gunn, Margaret Cho, and George Takei, “Do I Sound Gay?” is a cleverly wrought and insightful exploration of what one of Thorpe’s friends calls “the elephant in the room in the gay community.” In Person: Director David Thorpe.
