Colin Quinn
The acknowledged master of articulate and brainy observational comedy, Colin Quinn's sharp comic knife focuses on the human foibles that have toppled empires from the dawn of time. Coming up in the merciless but hysterical world of New York comedy, he hit the national stage on MTV's gameshow "Remote Control" before landing a spot on "Saturday Night Live." He held the coveted SNL Weekend Update anchor position for two years, worked in film ("A Night at the Roxbury," "Comedian"), made it big on Broadway with one man shows ("Long Story Short," directed by Jerry Seinfeld), and changed the industry with his Comedy Central show, "Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn." Traverse City will love Colin Quinn this Valentine's Day.

The World Champion Judah Friedlander
On the comedy stage, Judah Friedlander is The World Champion. Sure, he's Frank Rossitano on the Emmy-winning "30 Rock," he won an Independent Spirit Award for his role in the Sundance award winner "American Splendor," he's been in "Meet the Parents," "Zoolander," and "The Wrestler" -- but he's not an actor who does stand-up on the side. He's a standup comedian who acts on the side. He's been honing his act since 1989, doing standup just about every night. So even though Judah has made over 30 movies and appeared in hundreds of TV shows including Letterman, Conan, Fallon and The Daily Show, standup comedy is Judah’s priority and specialty.

Dick Gregory
Renowned as one of the greatest standup comedians of all time, Dick Gregory is a legend. His comedy, beginning in the 1950s, made history. No one had seen the likes of him before. He broke barriers and had America rolling in the aisles. And he is still doing it today, selling out shows across the country, as sharp and as funny and as acerbic as ever. We live in a time where we truly need the likes of - and sorely miss - comics like Lenny Bruce and George Carlin to say the things that others won’t say. Thankfully, we still have Dick Gregory! (We will present Mr. Gregory with our TC Comedy Fest Legends Award. Past recipients include Roseanne Barr and John Waters.)

Robert Wuhl: Assume the Position
Assume the position that history is pop culture... Robert Wuhl (“Good Morning, Vietnam,” “Bull Durham,” “Batman,” writer and star of “Arli$$,” winner on the “$10,000 Pyramid”) is coming to Traverse City with the funniest history lesson ever given, doing a live version of his smash HBO special “Assume the Position with Mr. Wuhl.” He’ll tell us about the first American Idol, Washington Irving; the legend of giving the middle finger; and all about our national tendency to send our American heroes to central casting. Cheers if you can remember half of the new myths and facts that you’ll hear during the show. Rated R for language: it’s history with F-bombs thrown in, so it is appropriate for some teenagers.

It’s the only comedy show we’ve found that’s funny enough for bachelor parties and clean enough for church groups. We’re bringing in the best performers from all over the U.S. to put on this uniquely clean, fast-paced, and positive improv comedy show for the entire family, with music, a variety of characters, pop-culture references, and rapid-fire one-liners. No two shows are alike. They put “Sportz” in the title because two teams battle for laughs and points as they make up scenes, games, and songs. The audience votes for the winners, a referee calls fouls for bad taste, and kids can play along if they wish! All ages.

2013\goonies_sm.jpg
Family Sunday Movie: "The Goonies"
Leonard Maltin wasn't alone when he noticed similarities between Goonies and the 1934 Our Gang comedy Mama's Little Pirate. Adapted by Chris Columbus from a story by Steven Spielberg, the film follows a group of misfit kids (including such second-generation Hollywoodites as Josh Brolin and Sean Astin) as they search for buried treasure in a subterranean cavern. Here they cross the path of lady criminal Mama Fratelli (Anne Ramsey) and her outlaw brood. Fortunately, the kids manage to befriend Fratelli's hideously deformed (but soft-hearted) son (John Matuszak), who comes to their rescue. The Spielberg influence is most pronounced in the film's prologue and epilogue, when the viewer is advised that the film's real villains are a group of "Evil Land Developers." The musical score makes excellent use of Max Steiner's main theme from The Adventures of Don Juan, not to mention contributions by the likes of Richard Marx and Cyndi Lauper.

Family Sunday Movie: "The Princess Bride"
Based on William Goldman's novel of the same name, The Princess Bride is staged as a book read by grandfather (Peter Falk) to his ill grandson (Fred Savage). Falk's character assures a romance-weary Savage that the book has much more to deliver than a simpering love story, including but not limited to fencing, fighting, torture, death, true love, giants, and pirates. Indeed, The Princess Bride offers a tongue-in-cheek fairy tale depicting stable boy-turned-pirate Westley's journey to rescue Buttercup (Robin Wright), his true love, away from the evil prince (Chris Sarandon), whom she had agreed to marry five years after learning of what she had believed to be news of Westley's death. With help from Prince Humperdinck's disgruntled former employee Miracle Max (Billy Crystal), swordsman Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), and a very large man named Fezzik (Andre the Giant), the star-crossed lovers are reunited.
