Robert Wuhl: Assume the Position
2013\assumetheposition_sm.jpg
Assume the position that history is pop culture... Robert Wuhl (“Good Morning, Vietnam,” “Bull Durham,” “Batman,” writer and star of “Arli$$,” winner on the “$10,000 Pyramid”) is coming to Traverse City with the funniest history lesson ever given, doing a live version of his smash HBO special “Assume the Position with Mr. Wuhl.” He’ll tell us about the first American Idol, Washington Irving; the legend of giving the middle finger; and all about our national tendency to send our American heroes to central casting. Cheers if you can remember half of the new myths and facts that you’ll hear during the show. Rated R for language: it’s history with F-bombs thrown in, so it is appropriate for some teenagers.

Todd Barry and Doug Benson
2013\barry_benson_sm.jpg
Todd Barry has done standup on nearly every late show you can think of including Letterman, Kimmel, and Conan 10 times. He's played all the big comedy festivals, he's been in movies ("Road Trip,""The Wrestler"), he writes Most Underappreciated Tweets of the Year lists, and has acted in everything from "The Larry Sanders Show" to "Sex and the City." Currently a recurring deadpan standup in FX's "Louie," his new Comedy Central Special "Super Crazy" is now available on Amazon and iTunes. Doug Benson (“Best Week Ever,” “Last Comic Standing”) has been on an album-a-year schedule since 2008, plus he records a popular weekly podcast Doug Loves Movies, does the occasional film (“Super High Me”) and TV project (“The Benson Interruption”), and keeps up a robust schedule of live dates, which we’re glad we’re on. Such a busy schedule for High Times’ 2009 Stoner of the Year.

T.J. Miller and Sheng Wang
2013\miller_wang_sm.jpg
You’ve seen him in “Get Him to the Greek” and “She’s Out of My League,” and heard him as the voice of Tuffnut in “How to Train Your Dragon.” One of Variety’s Top 10 Comics to Watch in 2008, T.J. Miller's a frequent panelist on “Chelsea Lately” and is the host of Comedy Central’s new show “Mash Up,” a standup series that’s got everything: jokes, sketches, and visualizations. What this festival has been missing is a Taiwanese Texan-but never fear, Sheng Weng is here! He’s toured with the Comedians of Comedy, appeared on Comedy Central’s “Live at Gotham,” had a half hour special on Comedy Central, and was part of John Oliver’s NY Stand Up Show. His act, honed in San Francisco’s thriving standup community, is finally here in TC.

Spaceballs
2013\spaceballs_sm.jpg
Planet Spaceball’s President Skroob sends Lord Dark Helmet to steal Planet Druidia’s abundant supply of air to replenish their own, and only Lone Starr can stop them. Right? Mel Brooks does “Star Wars,” and then some. A cult comedy favorite starring the late, great John Candy, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, and Dick Van Patten - what more could you want on a Friday night? Rated PG, 96 min.
6:00 PM (90 min)
Susie Essman and Allan Havey
2013\essman_havey_sm.jpg
You probably know Susie Essman from her eight seasons as Jeff Garlin’s sassy wife on the critically-acclaimed “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” but this Gotham veteran and Carolines regular has done it all: big shows (“Tonight Show,” “Politically Incorrect”), movies (“Bolt”), her own HBO show, and a book: “What Would Susie Say: Bullsh*t Wisdom About Love, Life, & Comedy.” He’s one of the original hosts of Comedy Central, has performed on Letterman 10 times, and has worked with everyone from Steve Martin, Gilda Radner, and John Candy to Matt Damon, Sarah Silverman, and Louie C.K. You’ve seen Allan Havey on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Seinfeld,” and lots more. Cocksure and irreverent, he’s considered one of the best standups working today
8:15 PM (90 min)
Neal Brennan and Ian Edwards
2013\brennan_edwards_sm.jpg
@nealbrennan: Co-creator of “Chappelle’s Show” and less popular things. Comedian. Hero. Victim. He seemingly does stand-up every night at the top clubs in NYC or LA. He writes/directs the ESPYs and the White House Correspondents Dinner with Seth Myers. He makes movies that the NY Times & Ebert both like (“The Goods”). He’s been on Jimmy Fallon & Conan. And now - TC! Ian Edwards opened for J.B. Smoove at our Comedy Fest in 2010, and ever since, we’ve been receiving requests to bring him back for a full show. He’s done the big comedy festivals, he’s written for SNL, he’s been on MTV’s hit show “Punk’d” and HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam.” He’s performed on Conan and “Lopez Tonight,” and we’re thrilled to welcome him back to northern Michigan!

The World Champion Judah Friedlander
2013\JudahFriedlander_sm.jpg
On the comedy stage, Judah Friedlander is The World Champion. Sure, he's Frank Rossitano on the Emmy-winning "30 Rock," he won an Independent Spirit Award for his role in the Sundance award winner "American Splendor," he's been in "Meet the Parents," "Zoolander," and "The Wrestler" -- but he's not an actor who does stand-up on the side. He's a standup comedian who acts on the side. He's been honing his act since 1989, doing standup just about every night. So even though Judah has made over 30 movies and appeared in hundreds of TV shows including Letterman, Conan, Fallon and The Daily Show, standup comedy is Judah’s priority and specialty.

Best of Chicago Hosted by Jeff Garlin
2013\bestofchicago_sm.jpg
Jeff Garlin is bringing the best of the Chicago comedy scene to us, so we don’t have to traipse up and down the streets of the Windy City. Where else are you going to see Marty DeRosa, Megan Gailey, Ricky Gonzalez, and Liza Treyger - all on one stage?!
10:30 PM (90 min)
Jeff Garlin
2013\jeffgarlin_sm.jpg
The co-founder of this festival is also a standup comedian, director, producer, writer, actor, and author of two books. He's starred in films (“WALL•E”), directed films ("I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With"), and performed everywhere from Conan to "Mad About You" to "Arrested Development," with the likes of Amy Sedaris, Larry David, and Sarah Silverman. When he's not co-starring and Executive Producing his HBO hit "Curb Your Enthusiasm," you can find him performing in comedy clubs across the country and hosting his new comedy podcast, "By the Way, In Conversation with Jeff Garlin."
