Description

On the coast of Somalia, Abdi’s family have long sustained themselves as fishermen. But a recent surge in pollution, droughts, and war have forced the normally upstanding Abdi into a difficult situation. Desperate to make a better life for his family, he reluctantly joins a local pirate crew and sets out to hijack a passing French oil tanker, taking its crew hostage. But how far will he go to earn his cut of the ransom? An award winner at Sundance, this gripping docudrama plays like “Captain Phillips” from the pirates’ point of view, as portrayed by a cast of Somali refugees (mainly non-professional actors), offering mesmerizing and deeply human portraits of life on a side of the world we rarely see.
