Description

On the eve of her marriage, 32-year-old Michal is taken aback when her fiancé confesses that he no longer loves her and calls off their engagement. Not to be deterred, Michal keeps her wedding date on the eighth day of Hanukkah, 22 days away, believing this will give God enough time to find her a new groom—in short, it’s the perfect setup for an ultra-Orthodox romantic comedy. Michal is an unconventional challenge for matchmakers, since she makes her living by running a mobile petting zoo, has a way with snakes, and freely speaks her mind rather than acting a part. Moreover, she remains steadfastly unwilling to change who she is in order to suit her suitors. Israeli director Rama Burshtein continually surprises us with developments as the tension grows and the wedding date draws near in this mystical fairy tale about belief, endurance, love, family, loneliness, and belonging. Not your mother’s rom-com, this idiosyncratic and spiritual indie is one of the best crowdpleasers at this year’s festival.
