French writer/director Mia Hansen-Løve and actress Isabelle Huppert combine their strong talents for understatement in “Things to Come,” a portrait of a philosophy teacher who is confronted with two equally devastating domestic crises—and deftly handles both. The character of Nathalie navigates the aftermath of her mother’s death and her husband’s infidelity with confidence and grace, even as her career outside the classroom begins to falter. Just as graceful is Hansen-Løve’s direction; she captures Nathalie’s emotional journey with empathy and the beautiful sadness that permeates her entire filmography. “Things to Come” is one of the quieter films you’ll see this year, which makes it even more powerful as an examination of the difficulties life can throw at us as we age.
