Speedy with the Alloy Orchestra

We can’t think of a better pairing for the Alloy’s exuberant live accompaniment than the hilarious antics of silent film star Harold Lloyd in his final film, an out-of-control love letter to the great city of New York that will make you grin from ear to ear. In this fast-paced tale of modernization, the only thing that matters more than baseball to Lloyd’s protagonist Speedy is his girlfriend. She’s distraught that her crusty grandfather “Pops” might lose his business, the city’s last horse-drawn streetcar. When a motorized streetcar owner tries to derail Pops’ business, Speedy comes to the rescue. Featuring a dazzling mile-a-minute ride through the Big Apple and a cameo by the Babe (Ruth, that is) himself, this digital restoration from elements preserved by the UCLA Film & Television Archive is pure delight. Add to all of this a live performance by the Alloy Orchestra, the world’s best at silent cinema accompaniment, and you have one of the festival’s do not miss events. The renowned three-man musical super group utilizes unusual objects—homemade instruments, found objects, actual junk—to create a sound as unique as the films they support. Since 1991, they’ve written scores for over 30 films, performing at prestigious festivals worldwide to breathe life into silent gems. Help us welcome them back Up North!
