Diane Lane, Alec Baldwin, and hunky Frenchman Arnaud Viard star in a sumptuous romantic road trip through the French countryside that leads to a mid-life reawakening. Fifty-something empty nester Anne (Lane at her most charismatic) heads out on a drive from Cannes to Paris, with her neglectful Hollywood hot shot husband (Baldwin) supposedly waiting at the end. The trip would have taken just a few hours, were it not for the playful interference of her husband’s colleague, Jacques (Viard), who kindly offers her a ride, and then proceeds to devise a series of delightful detours, insisting that she enjoy the magnificent sights and sublime tastes of France along the way. As Anne artfully dodges Jacques’s flirtations, she nonetheless finds herself falling for his “joie de vivre,” as her senses are rejuvenated by the beautiful countryside, incredible food and wine, and breathtaking art, architecture, and adventure. It may have taken film royalty Eleanor Coppola (“Heart of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse”) until she was 80 to make her debut feature film, but this enchanting story of self-discovery in one of the world’s most alluring places was well worth the wait.
