Emily is having a tough time. After two years pursuing comedy in LA, all she has to show for it is a viral video calling card that did little for her career and even less for her bank account. So when her ex calls with the news that their once-shared cat is ill, it doesn’t take much for Emily to hop on the first plane and return to her old stomping grounds. Back in Austin, Texas, things don’t go quite the way she expected—her cat has passed away, her hipster-turned-yuppie ex has a perfect new live-in girlfriend, and without anywhere else to stay, she’s suddenly their guest in her old home. And so an urban odyssey of biting comedic set pieces—from awkward dinners to one really sick house party—ensues, as Emily attempts to navigate the city and people she left behind while keeping some sense of identity intact. SNL alum and “Master of None” star Noël Wells makes a sharp, unflinching directorial debut that feels real, relatable, and lived-in, and she is endlessly endearing in this can’t-miss indie, one of our favorite discoveries of the fest.
