This feels like exactly the right time for a 1990s-set nostalgia comedy—especially one as crackling and witty as “Landline.” “Obvious Child” director Gillian Robespierre reunites with comedian Jenny Slate (“Marcel the Shell”) for this sparkling feature that follows twentysomething Dana (Slate) and her high school sister Ali (Abby Quinn) as they bicker, dance, and navigate the many vices of young life—from dabbling in drugs, to clubbing, to cheating on long-term significant others. Slate and Quinn shine as endearing but lost young women who don’t quite have a handle on where their lives are going. An all-star ensemble cast—including John Turturro, Edie Falco, and Jay Duplass—adds further depth to an inspired script. Revel in all the 90s pop culture glory—No smart phones to be found! So many cheesy pop hits! The Must-See-TV references! The trips to Blockbuster!—in this warm, inviting film about the joys and pains of family, and the grand messiness of life.
