Drawing inspiration from the graphic novel of the same name, “Gemma Bovery” is a wry examination of life imitating art that self-consciously takes cues from Flaubert’s literary classic “Madame Bovary.” Gemma Arterton (“Their Finest”) plays the title character, a spirited Englishwoman still growing accustomed to life in the French countryside. Her nosy neighbor Martin (the comically brilliant Fabrice Luchini) complicates things by inserting himself into Gemma’s daily routine. When Gemma is tempted to stray from her husband, the parallels between Gemma and Flaubert’s heroine grow clearer, and by the time director Anne Fontaine’s charmingly droll film draws to a close, we can’t wait to find out whether or not Gemma will get her happy ending—although we may have a guess as to where it’s all headed.
