Fans of the seminal 1973 Al Pacino film “Serpico” have an opportunity to get acquainted with his nonfiction counterpart in Antonino D’Ambrosio’s documentary. The retired police officer is notorious for uncovering corruption inside the New York Police Department in the 1960s, risking his career and life in the process. After he blew the whistle, Serpico experienced paranoia and PTSD. Concerned for his safety, he exiled himself to Europe for more than two decades before coming back to America in the 1990s. D’Ambrosio interviews people close to Serpico, focusing on the man’s life instead of the story that surrounds him. Nonetheless, the film’s subtext acts as a reminder that police corruption has far from disappeared in the years since Serpico’s retirement. This testament to the courage and idealism of whistleblowers is augmented by original music from Jack White and an original score by Brendan Canty of Fugazi.
