Charlie’s career reads like a dream come true: a cosmopolitan wine critic, his compendium of wine rankings has made him the toast of France’s epicurean scene. But his high-city living gets a bitter taste of reality when the prodigal son must return home to help revive his family’s failing vineyard. There, he butts heads with his gruff father, and it becomes clear the so-called wine expert may not know the first thing about the fine art of making wine. Thinking modern contrivances will be the ticket to success, it’s only by getting back in touch with his roots—learning the traditional methods of his father and reconnecting with the daughter of the neighboring rival winery—does the vineyard start to flourish. Set in the stunning heart of Burgundy wine country and vintage in its distinct feel-good pleasures, “First Growth” offers a compelling look inside the French wine industry. It’s a robust and ample-bodied film with a perfect finish.
