Elle
2016 | France, Germany, Belgium | R | 130 min.
Isabelle Huppert won a Golden Globe for her unflinching performance in this harrowing take on the revenge fantasy genre. Huppert plays Michèle, a video game executive recovering—in her own caustic, sarcastic, and sharp-tongued way—from a break-in and sexual assault. Despite the trauma, she keeps her composure and carries on with her life, fighting rampant sexism in the workplace and maintaining the many complicated relationships in her life. Director Paul Verhoeven (“Starship Troopers,” also playing at this year’s festival) and Huppert expertly keep the audience guessing about Elle’s motivations in this complex, often shocking, corrosively funny, and strangely powerful film that is a triumph for both director and star, and one of the most captivating French films of the past decade.
