Description

Surprising as it is, in 1971, while the feminist movement was spreading throughout America, the women of Switzerland were still fighting for the right to VOTE. This absolutely charming film from director Petra Volpe follows an unassuming housewife in a small Swiss village, who spends her days tending to the every need of her husband, sons, and father-in-law, not giving a thought to “women’s lib.” That is, until her husband forbids her to take a part-time job, and her in-laws incarcerate her niece for running off with a boy. Realizing that women’s rights are human rights, Nora suddenly finds herself the poster child of the suffragette movement in town, her newfound celebrity bringing humiliation, threats, and the potential end to her marriage. But she refuses to back down. She convinces the women in her village to go on strike, and makes a few discoveries about her own liberation. The Audience Award winner at the Tribeca Film Festval this year is a warm, satisfying, thoroughly enjoyable tale about the fight for equality that is sure to inspire you and make you laugh.
