Shorts: Strange Planet
Program length: 96 min.
Making the familiar unfamiliar and the familiar
revealed is the common thread in this program
of our favorite award-winning avant garde shorts
from the past year. In the beginning, with “We
Chose the Milky Way,” Eva Marie Rødbro pays
an anthropological visit to a mysterious tribe of
young girls on a planet called Earth, emerging
with a blinged-out, hip hop, social-realist, scifi
doc version of “Spring Breakers,” where everything
is artificial, except friendships. And at the
end, we trace the fascinating material biography
of road salt from Chile’s Atacama Desert to
the ice-covered streets of America. Along the
way, we visit a “Dragstrip;” learn how to make
women look dead in “What Happened to Her;”
hear statements of universal truth laced with
wry humor in “Welcome to David Wojnarowicz
Week;” and imagine the 400,000 refugees who
flee war, persecution, and poverty each year
against a hypnotic factory backdrop in “Irregulars.”
Prepare to be mesmerized.
