Three siblings fight a corrupt town to try and keep the house they inherited from their late mother in this stylistic tragicomedy from Kazakh director Adilkhan Yerzhanov. Although the trio have proof of ownership, the tiny shack they move into has been home to squatter Zhuba, the town bully and drunk who also happens to be the brother of the police chief. Continuing with the themes of oppression and the struggles of the poor seen in his film “Constructors,” Yerzhanov mixes deadpan acting, absurd dance numbers, whimsy, violence, western iconography, and artistic influences from Vincent Van Gogh to Wes Anderson. The result is a dizzying foray into a bizarre and stunning, but vengeful, world.
